Unique Countertop Materials – Dover, Needham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, June 12, 2013

If you are remodeling your kitchen there are so many decisions to make. One of the most important decisions you will make is what to choose for your new countertops.  You kitchen counter takes up so much space, it is very important to make the right decision for you and the look you are trying to achieve.  Your choice of countertop material will also affect your ROI in your kitchen remodeling investment.

Some of the materials listed below are not necessarily less expensive than granite countertops, but they are unique and attractive, which will set your home apart from the others. This is important when you decide to sell your home.

Soap stone: Soap stone countertops looks a little like granite, but it has a distinctive matte texture and sparkles less than granite. Soap stone is a hard surface that can be purchased in slabs or tiles. One benefit of this material is that it is heat and stain resistant. This look is perfect for modern, farmhouse, or industrial-style kitchens.

Recycled glass: Recycle glass countertops have a granite look, but are more environmentally friendly. They come in every color or any combination of colors. They are durable, easy to maintain, and heat and scratch-resistant.

Tile: Tile countertops are not new, but they often it gets ruled it out. The most common objection to tile counter tops is stained grout, but there are two ways to prevent grout stains: use a dark-colored grout or seal the tile and grout and continue to periodically reseal it.

Metal: Metal countertops have that shiny metal soda fountain look. Made of zinc, the metal comes in sheets, which are applied to a substrate. If you are designing a retro-looking kitchen, you can install classic soda fountain edges to your counters. Decorative edging is one of the great design incentives of zinc countertops.

Concrete: Concrete countertops are heavy, and often have to poured on site. However, you can benefit from a stone-like counter top at a smaller price. Concrete can be finished to a shine, and must be sealed properly. The result is a modern and durable countertop that could put your house ahead of the rest.

Wood butcher block: Butcher block countertops require maintenance and sealing, but the look is incomparable. Combine wood types for a traditional checkerboard pattern. Or use one type of wood for a solid surface look. The colors and edge designs are highly customizable.

Granite countertops are nice, but there are a whole range of countertop material options out there. Dare to be different, and reap the rewards!
