Cut Costs on a Kitchen Remodel - Newton

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, May 30, 2013

According to a Consumer Reports the average cost of a kitchen remodel is $19,802 and the price tag can even be much higher. . That is a lot of money. But even with a significantly smaller budget you can still get a kitchen remodel. To do so it pays to avoid costly overruns, or you could be forced to make unwanted compromises.

Here are some ways to save on a kitchen remodel.

Choose your contractor wisely. While most kitchen contractors are reputable, the industry has its share of bad apples. Indeed, about 10% of respondents said they were disappointed by their remodeler's cost management. Don't chase the lowball bids, check references, insist on a written contract, and always pay by check or credit card, as opposed to cash.

Reuse, don't replace. If the layout of your cabinets works and your cabinets are in good condition you can save thousands by refacing or refinishing the kitchen cabinets. Refinishing or refacing cabinets is the least expensive option. Paying a pro to reface the cabinets, replacing the doors and drawer fronts, is a great solution for a kitchen remodeling project. Best of all, it only takes a few days.
Stick to the plan. This is the most essential. Making changes after the work is underway dramatically increases the costs. For a kitchen remodel, you should spend several weeks to a few months perusing magazines, meeting with pros, and visiting showrooms.

Kitchen Remodeling the Green Way

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, May 08, 2013

Home remodeling projects are on the rise as homeowners choose to stay in their homes. But as those homeowners choose to begin remodeling projects, they are also making the choice to do ‘green’ remodeling.

A minor kitchen remodel can improve the look and utility of your kitchen without costing a bundle. It can also yield a 75% return. Replace cabinet fronts, countertops and flooring. Installing low-flow faucets and energy-efficient appliances can reduce water and energy expenses as well.

Did you know that refacing kitchen cabinets rather than replacing your kitchen cabinets is not only faster and more affordable than a replacing them, it is also much better on our environment? You can use your existing cabinets when you remodel your kitchen. By refacing existing cabinets, you’re saving trees and production energy as well as reducing waste and putting less into our landfills.

You can “recycle” your kitchen cabinets, in a way, but without sacrificing style, quality or appearance, by refacing cabinets instead. Typically cabinet refacing takes about 2-5 days.

Green remodeling also includes using renewable resources in counter tops and in using green paints, those that do not emit VOC’s and that are made with green ingredients.

Less Money on Kitchen Remodeling - Boston

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, May 01, 2013

With spring remodeling season upon us, many homeowners are considering remodeling the kitchen.  The kitchen is universally the most important room in the home. Depending on your taste, the kitchen can be the most expensive room to renovate. Matching your budget with what you want can be challenging.

In fact, the potential cost of a kitchen redo is why many choose to live with what they have instead of remodeling. Generally kitchen cabinets make up the bulk of the remodeling cost accounting for 35% of the total cost while labor only accounts for 20%.

But there are other options:

First, if your cabinets are dated but in good condition consider having the cabinets refaced for a fraction of the cost of replacing them. A professional can clean and prep the kitchen cabinets in one day. Then they are refaced or refinished and the job can be completed in just a few days, rather than weeks when with replacement.

When you refinish or reface kitchen cabinets you can also reconfigure the space they give you, with some limitations. Trade a cabinet for drawers, or trade an appliance for more drawers, recycle bins or wine rack.

Also replace the drawer glides. Full extension glides allow you to utilize the full drawer and reach items in the very back. Self-closing glides close themselves quietly.

New countertops will add the finishing touch to those upgraded refinished or refaced cabinets.
