Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Roger Hazard, designer and producer of A&E network's “Sell This House”,  has designed a kitchen with cabinets colored lavender and eggplant. In fact, the used green cabinets in his own Texas kitchen.

The kitchen with the purple tones is “a piece of jewelry custom designed just for the homeowner,” he said. “It feels happy.”

But he also understands you might want a more neutral choice for your kitchen cabinets, and recommends you consider gray.

“Gray will mix with any color and will work with any flooring,” he said. “Brown is very color specific.”

The color gray gets votes from other designers as well.  Many designers note that gray is almost a water color, and say that ocean-inspired shades of blue and green are very popular.

Here are more trends noticed by Hazard:

  • People thought that bigger was better, but a really large kitchen is almost like going to the gym. It's more interesting to look at less space, and it can function better.
  • Today's kitchen should be comfortable so people can sit and talk to the cook.

Get a "Magazine" Kitchen for Less

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Empty Nesters who were considering downsizing, opted to stay and upgrade their home instead because they loved their location.
They decided instead to give their colonial a new look by updating the kitchen (keeping resale in mind).

They wanted to get the most for their remodeling dollars, so they had to decide what was worth the splurge and where they could save money. They learned that when it comes to kitchen remodeling, you can get the magazine look without breaking the bank.

They knew how they wanted the kitchen to look as far as light and color. But, to save money, they decided to keep most of their cabinetry.

But to get the kitchen they wanted, they removed some of the cabinets and refinished the cabinets with the lighter finish they had been looking at. The cabinet refinishing only took 3 days. For two of the cabinets they had the doors replaced with glass doors.

They also added a kitchen island of the same color.

One of the keys to saving on a kitchen remodel is to keep the existing cabinetry, spending money on countertops and hardware, and lighting.

They also splurged on an iridescent backsplash. Backsplashes give kitchens a high-end look at a variety of price points.

Getting started on building the kitchen of your dreams within a budget requires research, contact Kenneth C Lewis for details.

Remodel by Repurposing Your Old Kitchen Cabinets

Joseph Coupal - Friday, August 10, 2012

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry’s Contractor of the Year awards program recently identified some of the top nation-wide remodeling trends, which frequently show up in projects.

Reclaim, Reuse and Refurbish
Several winning projects mentioned reusing items in the home and/or installing reclaimed items. Many clients request reusing items from their existing kitchens to some degree in remodeling projects.

People try to save as much as possible; they don’t want to replace everything.

For example: different ways of reuse such as cabinetry. Reuse the existing cabinets by refinishing or refacing cabinets rather than replacing them keeps costs and waste down. Also, reclaiming barn doors and repurposing a dresser into a bathroom vanity.

Another example: reclaimed long-leaf pine flooring, which matched the addition to the original home’s flooring throughout.

Clients often want their project to have that antique-look. There is a trend toward the distressed wood interiors and away from the sleek, contemporary look.

Old is new. Clients are consistently asking to have an old piece of wood or furniture repurposed into something else and they want it distressed to look old.

If you would like to repurpose your kitchen cabinets, or an old dresser, contact Kenneth C. Lewis.

Green Kitchen Upgrades

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, August 01, 2012

The kitchen is where we spend most of our time when we are at home. It also accounts for much of a home’s energy use. Both of these factors make kitchens targets for green upgrades.

Upgrading to Energy Star appliances is the number one change homeowners make to have a more environmentally friendly kitchen. However, what about your kitchen cabinets?

If you want a kitchen face lift, but you want to stay green. Consider refacing or refinishing kitchen cabinets rather than replacing them. Cabinet refacing and refinishing eliminates the raw materials, energy use, and waste in building new cabinets.  Cabinet refacing and refinishing also eliminates using land fill space in dumping old cabinets.

There are even environmentally friendly, or green certified paints and stains you could use when refinishing and refacing your existing kitchen cabinets.

For information on pursuing your green kitchen upgrade, contact Kenneth Lewis.
