Angie's List of Kitchen Renovations

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, September 05, 2012

Not only is an outdated kitchen unattractive, but it can also make cooking challenging. Unfortunately, kitchen remodeling is one of the most expensive home improvement projects.

There are some ways that homeowners can update their kitchens without breaking the bank. These updates can lead to a more attractive kitchen that is also more pleasant for cooking and entertaining:

Angie's List tips: Simple kitchen updates

Remodel kitchen cabinets and shelves: Obtaining a completely new set of cabinets can be very expensive, but homeowners can hire a kitchen remodeling contractor to update, not replace, the cabinets inexpensively. Some common updates include adding slide-out shelves, lazy susans, drawers and new hardware, refinishing or refacing the cabinets. Painting or refacing cabinets is an aesthetically pleasing idea.

Install a new countertop: new countertop installation can take place in a single day, so homeowners may be able to find a contractor who will charge a reasonable rate for this upgrade. Corian or Granite countertops or some other material change the entire look and feel of your kitchen.

Update the faucets: A new kitchen faucet is a small addition, but it can change the look of a kitchen, making it appear more modern or refined.

Install new lighting: Lights that are too bright can give the kitchen a glaring, unfriendly look. Light that is too soft can make it hard to work. However, homeowners may want to consider installing several types of lights, in various places.

Add a garbage disposal or trash compactor: These appliances are relatively inexpensive and can be installed by most home builders. However, they can go a long way in making a kitchen more modern and practical.

No Need to Replace Kitchen Cabinets, Reface Kitchen Cabinets

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Now is the season that home remodeling and home improvement projects start. This spring, if you’d like to replace your kitchen cabinets but are worried about busting your budget, try refacing them instead of replacing them. Refacing kitchen cabinets with new doors and drawer fronts, rather than replacing all of the cabinetry, can save about 50% on cost.

Save Money and Time

As a very general rule, if replacing the cabinets will cost you $5,000, refacing cabinets them will cost $2,500. If you are on a budget, this is a way to save money.

Most of what you see in a kitchen is cabinet doors and drawers, so this makes up the bulk of a remodeling job. The money you save can be used for replacing the flooring or countertops, buying new appliances or adding new lighting.

Cabinet refacing is also much faster than totally replacing cabinets, taking only three to five days. In most cases, the appliances do not need to be moved and the homeowner can still use the kitchen.

How It Works

Refacing cabinets does not mean you have to use the same color that is there now.

Most kitchen cabinets have good ‘bones,’ with cabinets that are furniture-quality construction.

At Cabinetry by Kenneth C. Lewis, cabinet refacing is not a cheesy, peel-and-stick product and process. This is real wood or laminate veneer being adhered to your existing cabinets. If you do it this way, the new veneer becomes one with the cabinet box. It is there for life.

Because the outsides of the cabinets are redone, you also can take this opportunity to add a few more cabinets or an island. These can be built to match your refaced cabinets.

If you want to add a pantry or a kitchen island, it can be matched seamlessly.

The kitchen is the most-used room in the house, it should reflect the homeowner. All of the elements that you can add while refacing give it more character.
